Beyond Mountains there are Mountains

“Beyond mountains there are mountains,” is a quote from a book I am reading called Mountains beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder. The book is a quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, who was a man who would cure the world. In the context of the book it implied that there will always be new challenges in life. Once we get over one mountain, new mountains await us.

Living in the mountains isn’t easy but it sure is a beautiful experience. My days here consist of waking up to the sounds of chickens at the crack of dawn usually about 5:00 or 6:00 o’clock in the morning. After a walk in the mountains and a cold shower it’s time for breakfast. My breakfast is prepared by my loving host mother which deliciously consists of rice, beans, coffee and bread. If there is school I walk about 20 minutes to school or cram into the single bus with the rest of the students to teach English at the high school for the day. If there isn’t school I read, play with the children in the neighborhood, and go for a long walk in the mountains in the mornings. In the afternoon I host an English class in the homes of those in the village for people who are interested in learning the language. The students in my class range from 4 years old to 43 years old. I was excited to have older women in my class that were so passionate about learning English! My favorite thing to do here is teach.

However, I also have been doing a lot of learning and growing myself. I have been learning to enjoy the simplicity of life here. Away from everything I am used to and what is comfortable for me has been not only challenging but a great eye opening experience. I have gained a significant appreciation for who I have become and what I have been blessed with through living life side by side with those in the mountains.

In times of struggle or doubt I often reflect on the encouragement from my Dad which was to wait on the Lord. In hearing this it makes me think of the lyrics to the song, "Everlasting God."

Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord
We will wait upon the Lord
We will wait upon the Lord

Our God, You reign forever
Our hope, our Strong Deliverer

You are the everlasting God
The everlasting God
You do not faint You won't grow weary

You're the defender of the weak
You comfort those in need
You lift us up on wings like eagles

Beany also put it simply encouraging me and reminding me that in the words of her teacher “diamonds come from pressure.” Everything good and beautiful in life isn’t always easy. And everything easy in life isn’t always beautiful.

As I sit here and write this I am comforted by the sound of the pouring rain outside my window, pounding on the rooftops, and I reflect on two Bible verses.

Hebrews 13:5 “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

Deuteronomy 31:8 “The Lord himself will go before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forget you.”

Thank you for all your love, prayers, and support! They are greatly appreciated!! : )
